Bulky yarn can be made from virtually any fibers: wool, cotton, silk, alpaca, bamboo, acrylic, etc. This means that the feel and texture of your yam can vary significantly, from soft and silky to rough and strong.
Chunky yarns are usually defined as yarns which use a size 9 needle or higher. A super bulky yarn would need at least a Size 11. Many conventional knitters are used to knitting worsted weight (size For 8 needles) or smaller. They may struggle with the larger needles and get stuck deciding on a stitch which befits this type of yarn.
Very large needles, size 15 and above, can be had for any knitter to get used to. The large sticks feel weird and unwieldy. If you feel like this, l encourage you to keep trying. Try circular needles. These are helpful as the large sticks don’t extend as far back. Knitting with bulky yarns is extremely satisfying because your project. will get done so quickly.
Some popular bulky yarn brands include Berroco, Rowan, Lion’s Brand, Artyarns, Cascade Yarns. This is only a few of the hundreds of brands which make chunky yarns. Patterns are available from a wide variety of Sources as well. Try to make sure that the yarn you get is appropriate for the pattern. Be sure to check gauge and feel. This will make your time spent knitting and finishing a lot less frustrating!
